Hi Friends!

Recently I’ve reimmersed myself in the dissociative identity disorder community, or what I call the DID world. Actually, it’s not a reimmersion. When I was actively healing from dissociative identity disorder thirty years ago, there was no DID world. Back in the 1990’s, the medical and psychiatric communities thought multiple personalities or DID was a rare condition. Today, we know that’s not true. Research shows that from 1 to 3% of the population has DID. It is a perfectly normal coping strategy the young child’s mind utilizes when exposed to severe trauma over a long period of time.

But I digress. Back in the 1990’s, the only connections I had with others with DID were the members of a very small therapy group I was a part of. Today, there are mounds of ways to learn about DID and relate to others with the disorder. Facebook groups. YouTube channels. Books. Blogs. Movies. TV Series. You name it and the very creative DID participants will provide it.

I belong to several Facebook groups. When I joined my first one, I stayed up all night reading posts. Even though it has been years since my integration, I felt like I had come home. So many people were describing exactly what I had experienced. People asked questions I have asked all my life and others were answering those very same questions. I found I, too, could answer some people’s questions and be a support to them, which is a very nice experience to have. When I had a question about writing my memoir, I was able to get excellent feedback from hordes of people on a Facebook group.

On the other hand, apparently there is a lot of misrepresentation of DID, especially in movies and TV series, none of which I’ve seen myself. So I am here to present DID from one authentic perspective – mine – padded a little bit by the research I’ve read. I hope it is helpful for you, whether you have been diagnosed, have a loved one with the diagnosis, or are just curious.
